Depth profiles are recorded in the surf area with the help of helicopters. A day with such ideal conditions is very rare. (00092011)

Richards Bay Harbour/Natal/South Africa Helicopter sounding on future North Breakwater

Description: Richards Bay Harbour/Natal/South Africa

Helicopter sounding on future North Breakwater

Immediately prior to the start of construction on the north breakwater a profiling (sounding) was taken by helicopter over the entire width of the sole later riprap. For this purpose a rare day was awaited with little surf waited and recorded the profile especially in the surf. The swell waves on the east coast of South Africa are enormous and can swell to a great height. The breakwaters are situated in an area which has one of the strongest breakers on the earth. Even the sea manual warns very strongly about the sea breakers here. Basically this situation is encountered the whole year round.
