Sunbeams penetrate the water, meeting the Baby Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias). (00015509)

Description: Great White shark/Carcharodon carcharias

For many years I have been on my way to take photos of the Great White Shark, and I have always been looking for a Baby Great White Shark. Last July, in a fantastic light mood, a small Great White Shark, which had presumably been born a few hours earlier, came in my field of vision. When it was in the centre of the falling light beams, I took the picture near Dyer Island, South Africa. After their birth – they are born in the open water, having a size of approximately 1.30 to 1.50 metres at this time -, Great White Shark Babies are already fully developed, depending on themselves from the beginning. Young Sharks – they grow very fast – are very cautious, immediately taking flight when a grown Shark turns up. Only very few Great White Shark Babies survive their first year and reach adulthood.
