Newsletter www.jostimages.com - December 2005

Dear readers,

It's been some time since the last newsletter appeared and it's about time for a progress report

I'm happy about the fact that daily up to  4,000  visitors from all over the world visit
www.jostimages.com  and www.jostimages.com. There are many enthusiastic comments.

Here are some excerpts from the numerous comments:

..I just wanted to tell you what a great site you have. And to say that your photographs of the Great White Sharks are magnificent!
I heard about you through a friend of mine. I live in the USA.

I have been in love with White Sharks ever since I have seen the movie Jaws when I was young.
I have several shark books, stuffed sharks, towels shirts, etc.

But since I am not rich & because I am disabled my dream of seeing a real White Shark up close is Nil.
Thanks for having such a wonderful site for everyone that loves sharks; to view..

A co-worker of  Dr. Leonard Compagno, Shark Research Centre Cape Town,  wrote:
..I was blown away by your website images! I have been trolling the net looking for suitable visuals for our new exhibit.
We are busy with the installation of Sharkworld, an exhibition for the South African Natural History Museum in Cape Town. We are working in tandem with the Save our Seas foundation.
Even so, we intend for the exhibit to be a showcase for the world's best shark/underwater photographers such as Chris and Monique Fallows and Tom Campbell, who have agreed to help. Would you consider donating the use of some of your pics?
Cape Town is fast becoming the shark capital of the world, especially where the Great White is concerned. The museum is visited by hundreds of thousands of local and international visitors per year, and with your help we are well-placed to spread awareness of the importance of sharks, their protection, as well as to dispel misconceptions about these magnificent creatures..

The magazin http://www.g-o.de writes e. g. under biology/zoology about www.jostimages.com:

"Phantastic pictures from Klaus Jost  of naturewilderness, the bears of Alaskathe Great White Shark, breaching Great White Sharks, the Tiger Shark, the Bull Shark the Lemon Shark, of sharks and sea birds as well as exciting underwater pictures of several oceans..

I also get many e-mails with all sorts of questionsIt becomes more and more difficult for me to find enough time to answer them all.

Special thanks go to Holger Witt who hosts the website and updates it regularly. Everything connected with it lies in his hands.

Everythink about him was beautiful exept his jaws .The Old Man and the Sea. Ernest Hemingway, is the title of a Canon Europe Interview with me. In this interview, the fatal situation of the sharks is made known to a group of people which usually has nothing to do with these animals. The resonance from all over the world was very positive. The interview can be read under:

At the end of May/beginning of June 2005, one of my pictures of a Great White Shark was shown on two promotional towers in front of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in the size of 4.90 x 2.05  m. However, the impressively large bill was not intended to scare people as usual, but to communicate a positive image. This worked out perfectlyIt was titled "Swim with the big fish". The photo, an extreme closeup view of a Great White Shark, was taken off Dyer Island/South Africa .

A compliment  to the advertising agency and the bank, who also used other animal motives in this campaign in the same positivway.

IJul/August I was again in South Africa and also visited Dr. Leonard Compagno in the South African Natural History Museum in Cape Town. His latest book "Sharks of the World" (Leonard Compagno, Marc Dando, Sarah Fowler ISBN 0-691-12072-2) is milestone and can be recommended to everybody interested in sharks. In the meantime, the "Sharkworld exhibition. can be visited all the year. While visiting Cape Town you should schedule this shark exhibition in the museum. Some of my shark motives are on display there, too.

Of course I visited Gansbaagain. But my enthusiasm was limited and I am not sure if I will return to this place next year. The White Shark Tour Operator uses larger and larger boats, sometimes with more than 20 personon board. Shark cages with a capacity of up to six persons are used and it is just like working on the assembly line that is, if the shark on duty shows upAlthough I am not directly involved in this (whenever possible I try to be alone with Andre Hartman in a small boat), I don't like the high concentration of the large boats with many visitors around Dyer Island, and I guess neither do the sharks.

Moreover, the weather was mostly bad during my stay and I was able to visit animal parks in the meantime, concentrating on land animals. Andre Hartman . also an excellent expert of the land Fauna and Flora . made it possible for me to take fascinating pictures of the "Golden or Yellow Cape Cobra. (Naja nivea).

I Septembethe renowned magazin"JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY  Interfacehad a Great White Shark on its cover. I made the cover picture; it was once the picture of the year of GEO. The editor's comment: "It is, perhaps, the most striking cover yet in this journal's short history..."

At the end of September/beginning of October I was in the South Seas, where I was able to document six shark species despite the bad weather. The photo material is currently being scanned.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all our readers!
