Photos of the tropical coral reef with many hard corals and soft corals of the red sea, the Maledive Islands and of Fiji. The coral reefs with their large number of species, their colourful splendour and their great variety of forms are overwhelming for every visitor. There is no habitat which is more densely populated than a coral reef. Here you can find an abundance of life. The construction performance of the tiny coral polyps is enormous and no other organism has ever reached it. Corals are fragile creatures which can only live in water temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. They die in higher water temperatures. Apart from man-made destruction of coral reefs, coral bleaching has been added since 1998. The future will show to what extent the affected coral reefs will be able to regenerate. The progressing global warming and El Niño - striking at increasingly short intervals – don’t provide any good preconditions.
