Photos of the Brooks waterfall in the Katmai National Park/Alaska over that the way of the salmons leads to the spawn place.

The Brooks Falls in the Katmai National Park in Alaska are the last barrier for the Sockeye Salmons before reaching their spawning grounds. During the salmon migration the salmons try to surmount the river barrier, which is approximately 1.80 metres high, to reach the destination of their burdensome journey from the sea to their place of birth. Every year in July, this key place is a centre for Brown Bears with “salmon guarantee”. The observation platform directly at the waterfall is occupied by visitors from dusk to dawn. As in the meantime also day’s tourists arrive, this place is hopelessly overrun. It is difficult to get an observation place, even if it is only for a short time. Quietness doesn’t return until the Brooks Lodge is closed in late autumn. The “salmon run” is over, and the foliage of shrubs and trees is shining in the most beautiful colours of autumn. Only a few latecomers are still on their way to reach the spawning grounds. Every now and then a bear comes along and you can tell that it has had up to 30 kilograms of salmon on every day during summer by simply looking at it. What seemed unbelievable during the hectic summer months is now becoming reality: you are alone in the untouched nature at the waterfall.
